History

Sathya Sai Grama is a global village that stands firm in its foundation of probity and in its forte of character, and is a community that was knitted slowly and steadily, bearing a strong testimony to the amalgamation of human effort and God’s grace. Sri Madiyal Narayan Bhat (fondly called as ‘Anna’) was the catalyst behind the establishment of Sathya Sai Grama at Muddenahalli village, Chikkaballapur District. Kindled by Gandhian philosophy and patriotism on the one side and lofty philosophical sensitivity on the other, he was an epitome of spirituality in thought, word and deed. The purity and sincerity of his spirit for serving his countrymen attracted similar youth in large numbers to walk the noble path of service to humanity. With his band of ardent commandos of service, ‘Loka Seva Vrinda’ was formed in the year 1960 under his direct guidance.

His spiritual hunger and his zeal to serve the country further deepened and shone forth upon his encounter with Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 1962. He started the Sathya Sai Vihar School at Alike in the year 1963, which further expanded to Sathya Sai Vihar campus, Sharada Vihar campus, Vani Vihar campus and Sri Sathya Sai Mandira.

Further in the year 1973, the first school at Muddenahalli was built, after combatting
several hurdles and predicaments, constantly egged on and emboldened by Sri Sathya Sai Baba Himself at every step. Mr B N Narasimha Murthy, current Chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence, played a key role during the formative years of Educational Institutions at Muddenahalli. Just 27 boys for Grade 8 along with a dedicated band of teachers was all it took towards galvanized action for the next few years to secure the best results in the State Level Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations. The fame of the school instantly spread to many parts of the State, and thus the School grew in its capacity academically and spiritually as the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Higher Primary and High School for boys. Subsequent to this, Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Pre-University College (for boys) came about in the year 1982 and Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Kendra (CBSE school for boys) in the year 1998. Today, Sathya Sai Grama provides canopied shelter to many children for learning, growing, and exploring their real purpose in life in these schools that operate under various Trusts such as, Prashanthi Balamandira Trust, Sri Sathya Sai Saraswathi Education Trust and Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust.

On January 6, 1976, with a desire to build a missionary organisation, Sri Narayan Bhat
along with some of his loyal servitors submitted to Baba the desire to offer Loka Seva Vrinda along with its group of educational institutions to Him. Baba lovingly accepted the Institution. Sathya Sai Grama was the name benevolently bestowed by Baba then. This unique centre of love, service and spirituality that was established more than 50 years ago; has today blossomed into an ever-more vibrant spiritual sanctuary; acting as the main artery with branches of love and service around the world; divinely guided by Sri Sathya Sai Baba from the spirit world; through His chosen instrument, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai.
